Seabass belong to a family of spiny-finned fish known as Moronidae, closely related to groupers. A slow growing species, sea bass can live up to 30 years of age and can achieve a length of up to 1 metre.Spawning stock biomass for this stock has been declining for some time. However, fishing pressure has been reduced somewhat by a series of management measures and is currently determined as being within sustainable limits. When buying seabass, it’s best to opt for fish that has been caught using the more sustainable traditional fishing method of hook and line. Line caught seabass are landed from mainly small inshore boats around many parts of England and Wales, particularly in the south west.
